Match of Thrones 18
In Westeros, bastards (also 'logical child' or 'baseborn') born to nobles are affirmed surnames contrasting than their chaplain's, according to the region they were born in. These surnames are mostly associated with the geographic or climatic features of the pertinent regions: in the Reach - the bastards' surname is Flowers; in the Westerlands - Hill; in the Iron Islands - Pyke; in the Riverlands - Rivers; in Dorne - Sand; in the North - Snow; in the Vale - Stone; in the Stormlands - Thunder-shower; in the Crownlands - Waters. The curious surnames apply not to noble-born bastards, who are frankly acknowledged by their noble parent. Accordingly, bastards both of whose parents are commoners, or noble-born bastards that are unacknowledged during their blue blood parent (like Gendry) cannot avail oneself of the momentous surname. A noble-born bastard can be legitimized before royal dictate, that being the case is considered as trueborn child and changes the surname to the forebear's. Be that as it may, the social blot in one's copybook of the bastardy may not each time be lifted consistent after legitimization.
